Learning Basket Illusion

Back in March @trc65 posts about his basket weave illusions got me fascinated by that type of project. I'm relatively new to turning and his posts were the first I had seen of this art form. Down the rabbit hole I went. About 6 months later, I wanted to share some of what I have managed to create. I have certainly learned a lot and there is much to improve with my process. For one, several of my segmented bowl shapes turned out more like funnels, but I think my last one is an improvement (the one with pyrography without color). I also went from a home-made indexing wheel to a purchased indexing wheel on a dedicated bench-top setup rather than doing it all on the lathe. My ability to cut beads has improved as has my pyrography marks. I have attached the pieces in the general order I have made them to try to show how things are evolving. I don't think anything I've created actually looks like a basket, maybe it's more accurate to call it mosaic illusions.

Incredible. That’s so much better than some of my rabbit holes. Really impressed. Also impressed with your turned forms. The butterfly pattern really jumped out at me.

I stand in awe! Amazing collection! First impression is that you are already a master of this art form! Congrats! Chuck
 
Fantastic work! You can certainly see a progression as you do more and develop your own styles and methods.

As to the term "basket illusion", it seems to be used interchangeably across the two general 'styles'. The first using radial lines and the resulting different cell sizes. The second using equidistant lines so that all cells (stitches) are the same size to more closely resemble a coiled woven basket.

Both styles are worthy of praise, and amongst turners, the differences are instantly recognized when seen. The term has been used interchangeably for so long that I don't think any of us would be successful trying to use more descriptive terms to differentiate the two.

Having said that, I like your use of 'mosaic' as it, to me at least, more accurately describes your style. Bottom line, everyone is free to describe their work as they see fit.

Keep up the good work, and continue to explore designs as you perfect methods.
