Im a turner located in Southern California and Ive been trying to find a good source for some rounds. If you or anybody you know have a source for me, let me know. I don't mind traveling a couple hours and spending some money, as long as its cheaper then buying bowl blanks on ebay.
 
Your best bet is to hit the streets . Go visit the small independet tree guys, landscapers clearing sites. And always take something as an offering beer, coffee , donuts . You aren't likely to find anyone set up to market rounds to craftsmen this is a relationship you have to cultivate. But once you invest the time it pays off. And of couse I'm speaking from the opposite side of the u.s. but this has worked for me
 
Take a look at Craigslist. Sometimes, you will luck out, if you respond quickly. Even check the Free stuff. Need to look at it consistently, as the deals are somewhat few and far between. Chuck
 
Free stuff on Craigslist is always full of cut down trees down here in the south.
 
Can't forget about fellow WB folks, and the wood/rounds/bowl blanks they might have available. Recommend you also put out a specific request on this site -- just perhaps someone will respond with deals you just can't refuse. Chuck
 
With all the trees down from the recent storms, I think there would be a lot of downed trees, maybe a little north of you.

I've been checking craigslist everyday in my area and the areas around but most people chop up the rounds for firewood. I've also been trying to find a tree service contact that will notify me when something is available but that seems to be a dead end as well. Maybe its just the season or something and the resources are low. i wish i had a more reliable source for some wood for turning.
 
Can't believe they allow them to burn them out there in the land of fruits and nuts, I thought they outlawed fireplaces of there. If firewood is an issue, things should pick up soon as it warms up. But there should be a few that are giving it away regardless. Biggest problem is getting there before the firewood folks carry it off.

They don't burn the wood on site, they take it back to their lot and process it for selling.
 
The tree guys and firewood processors are a great resource. But they aren't going to think of you while they are busting their ass to make a living. Ah until you develope the relationship. Visit the firewood lot bring your work to show. Bring something for them . Show respect for their job. Let them know they could get a few bucks for that narly wood that they hate to split. Visit and look what they have on the lot. Its all about relationships. or you could just buy bowl blanks on feebay or take out a loan and buy from woodcraft .LOL

Have you tried the Big Bear Lake forest ranger station? They usually had some trees they had cut (or a location to pile em up) when I went out to see em...
