I’m back looking for more black ironwood (Krugiodendron ferreum), a hard and heavy domestic from Southern Florida. I was able to get a piece from a member here last year that I had made into a turkey striker.

I could cut four 10” long pieces 1” thick and 5-1/4” wide. Total length of this board is 47” but I would trim the checks off the ends before cutting the 10 inchers

Good morning Tim @TimR . Do you have any cutoffs from that board? Enough for a small bowl(s) 3x3? Jim
How bout a piece final size 6" x 3" x 1-1/8" . I'd need to cut from larger piece and trim to remove split area, might be able to send First Class...will know once cut and trimmed.

This doesn't look like the krugiodendron ferreum I am familiar with. I have had several log sections and several formal IWCS samples (only 6 x 3 x .5", but with ID down to where cut), and all have been a fairly uniform darker brown with no figure. The density has meant that all have had a crack somewhere, even at sample size. Are you sure this is krugiodendron and not just another wood w common name ironwood?

Am I 100% sure, nope. You may recall we had this discussion about 2 yrs ago from other lumber I had that seemed similar. My smeller not as good as I'd like, which can be a bad thing! Oh...and there was a big crack in this piece that I cut away.
So in full disclosure to @JR Parks , recognize this may be Black Ironwood or an African Olivewood...either way, it's heavier than water and extremely dense.

It does look like African Olivewood. However, the specific gravity of olivewood at 12% MC is listed as .99, which should barely float. Tim has shown pictures of this wood sunken and he’s told me it sinks like a rock. Whatever it is it has some unique grain patterns when turned. I may do some digging today on this.

Would you happen to have a verified piece of krugiodendron ferreum for sale or trade? I just need a small piece (7/8" square x 5") for a pen. Thanks.
