Lots of wood for trade - long version

Oh, @daveflutes I almost forgot… and I’ll cut you a piece of the querces agrifolia when I get it from @BoonareeBurl

So it’ll be a couple more weeks before I’m ready to mail your package. Hold onto your shipment for now, and I’ll let you know when I’ve got yours ready to go.

Lovely thanks! I might have to send yours sooner anyway to make room:) I'm likely to have some more for you soon so they can go separately! I'll get you a list of the new ones.
 
@Big Ry you have your own crate now!

I'm just waiting for the replacement cornelian cherry. It's going to be octagonal-ish, but it seems the branches just don't come thick enough for 1.5" square spindles. I'll send you both pieces I'll have

I think I can do larger cornelian cherry. I'm gonna need a trip to a forest near here with large amounts if you want that but it isn't too far.

Been stressing with work lately, so haven't had much of any shop time. But hopefully after today when i meet with upper management things will calm down a little more. We'll see. Either way, I'm almost done prepping your pieces as i mentioned in my DM. I just gotta see about the ID on this meranti.

It is what it is with the cornelian cherry. I'm after it for the hardness. I just prefer wider but don't really have an intended use for it yet.

I was interested in the cornelian cherry for it's hardness. Assuming the stuff you can get is equally hard, i imagine it'd need to be a sizeable parcel to be worth the shipping from Austria, no? I've never ordered anything from Austria. I'm just assuming the shipping and duties would be on the higher side.

Yea they are. I am planning on sending wood to Sa Motors (a few spindles) and friedrich9 (a few bowl blanks) I could fit something in. It would be wider than what Dave has but not by much.


Just to recap, I now need to pack glossy buckthorn for everyone, find common buckthorn for everyone, get white poplar for everyone and a piece of cornelian cherry for Ryan.

Hi Dave, I cut the Rocky Mountain Juniper, Lodgepole pine, Englemann spruce, and green ash. Here’s everything except the oak I’m getting from BoonareeBurl , which I’ll get in cut within the next two weeks.

@SA-Motors lovely thanks! A really nice mixture and thanks for cutting everything perfectly to size. I have yours half wrapped then I ran out of packaging... I should be able to send it towards the end of the week.
For the next trade I'll also check what Ryan wants from the new batch of Australian woods so I can cut them at the same time.

@daveflutes you wanted glossy buckthorn and white poplar right? Or also common buckthorn?

I have one branch of silver poplar, two logs of glossy buckthorn and two logs of common buckthorn.
The silver poplar is 77cm long and 7cm wide at the thinnest point. It is relatively dry. Maybe around 16-17 mc. These are all estimates because I don’t have a moisture meter that reaches the core.

The glossy buckthorn is 55cm long (actually 56 but I will have to remove one cm from one end due to mold) and just under 10cm at each end. The second log is much larger and longer. Both have major checking on each end but I would easily bet that it has enough usable wood. It also has some insect damage in the pith but as it is so wide you can almost certainly get past that. Both have dried a bit
And I would estimate under 20 mc.

The logs of common buckthorn are both 78cm long and 8-9 cm wide. One of them was very burly and is what is left over after I removed them. This one should quite easily make a flute but will require some finesse while sawing because it has a slight curve to it. It is relatively dry though. The second one is freshly cut but very very clear. Better than even the glossy buckthorn.

@SA-Motors you also wanted some of these right? Which ones? I can probably get more of any but the quality will be similar. @Friedrich9 you also wanted some bowl blanks of these. I will almost certainly not find any common buckthorn that wide. I source it from the swamp near me which means it is very old undisturbed growth but it isn’t very wide. If I ever find any wide enough I will set some aside for you. I did manage to find some sizeable glossy buckthorn. Enough for a small bowl. Regarding the silver poplar you might just want to find a large enough piece of mappa burl. They are almost always the right species and you can get that stuff in the US too. I can certainly get you a bowl blank though.

Thanks @daniscool they would all be amazing thanks. Common buckthorn and silver poplar are the last two European ones I need from the poster. The sizes look fine, I just need 30cm straight so they should work. I'm a bit out of the loop so I'll check what I've got for you

I can't believe you already got through all those species. I still haven't been able to source all the ones above 3000lbf Hardness lol
 
Hi @daniscool so great of you to search the swamps for these pieces for all of us! One thing that I’ve really liked behind each species of wood I try is the story behind it and where it came from. I’ll be able to tell folks where it came from, and often times I read up about the trees and the area where the wood is from. I would be delighted with a piece of each kind of buckthorn and one of the white poplar. For me, I’ll need the full lengths, at least 48 to 50cm. My finished piece will be 46cm, but the extra length allows me to mount it in the lathe more easily and avoid most of the end checking. I really like the gnarly burly piece. Thank you again!

Can do. You may have to glue for the common buckthorn. Glossy I can get 4-5 inches wide.

I can do that. I got another piece of silver poplar. That one is very gnarly. It is also completely green. It is more the long enough though.
