Maple and Black birch are the first two I think of. Sawdust color looking more maple. Any smell to the wood? Look forward to the next few steps.

It kind of looks like a eucalyptus burl to me. They're usually pretty smooth on the outside.

Yeah but the wood is usually different. Also, they are usually eyed burls. Still a possibility.

John, just looked at picture 5 and zoomed. Looks like there might be banding in those rings. Thinking I might want to change my thoughts. Look foraward to the next steps and maybe some close-up shots.

Trimmed the fat and got them cut into blanks. They’re dry so put them in the queue.

Not maple and think the bark rules out black birch. It’s dense and somewhat difficult to cut with the chainsaw and bandsaw, many years dry, no detectable smell. Here’s some more pics, don’t like labeling a finished product Unknown and appreciate the help.

flat sawn clean wood

Thin clean up cut where the burl started, scarfed off the trunk

Hi John @Jonkou Great photos to ID purposes!
I checked in with AI and it offered the following assessment:

"I suspect this is:
👉 a large maple burl / crotch / trunk deformation, partially spalted, with mixed figure.
" And quite possibly sugar maple.

There's actually a long write up detailed why it made that decision if anyone is interested in the "thought" process.
Hope this helps!

For wood ID AI is really not so good. I forget which one it is but one of them lets you choose its sources for information. If you sue that one you could put in Paul’s site and the wood database.

Wife’s AI app said Spalted maple too but disagree. Turned lots of maple over the years and this wood has different characteristics. Based on info from the Hobbit and Wood Database IMO hornbeam matches best.
