Maple Burl Form

What strikes me is the impeccable finish, and the fact it just didn’t explode on you what with all the voids. Very impressive! Chuck

That's sweet Tim! Is the color typical for that wood?
I'm not sure what's typical for the wood. The only other piece I made from this tree was white.

Also, samples I cut for Mark were also white.

Don't remember what color was when I cut this chunk off a log a year ago. After cutting this blank, it when into a lidded plastic garbage can that promptly got filled with walnut blanks that I didn't have time to seal at the time, so the can just sat in the shed, and I dug through it to find the blank a couple weeks ago.

My guess is the color is a result of it being a basal burl and maybe some aging darkened the wood.

Thanks Chuck. It was actually very stable while turning. Most of the dark areas that you see are bark inclusions rather than voids. The only void is the large area on the bottom half in picture three.

Burl and inclusions and a nice shape! Love turning when the inclusions make the chips self clearing!

I've gotten to the point where I prefer to turn something with inclusions/holes. Not because of the neat look, but because you don't have to stop as often to clear chips!
