But once sanded, oiled and waxed, i think it has more depth and 3D than all but a few woods.
They make great booked drawer faces. And cabinet panels.

In Europe we only get big leaf maple rarely but the little quilted stock I have worked with was only outmatched by koa, possibly quilted sapele and ringed gidgee. Really cool stuff.

I have a ringed gidgee knife handle- it was stunning when new-tight curl. 10 years later- just an expensive dark piece of wood now. Otherwise I agree. Big leaf is by no means rare or getting in short supply.. it is a weed.

Really? I don’t have any old used gidgee on hand. Actually I’m not sure if I have any gidgee in my shop at all.

Do you have pics. I find this very interesting. If wood can lose figure the same way it can change colour it might influence my future buying decisions.

I only have the one example but it seems like rosewood- darkens with age. I can take a now picture. I am sure all wood changes color but Big leaf does not change color enough for me to notice. Those panels in bench are 12-13 yrs old.

The colour change is expected but the figure becoming less pronounced is not something I was thinking.

Or am I just stupid and what you’re actually saying is that the wood darkens so much that the figure is not visible anymore?

actually looks curlier in pic than in hand. Beautiful knife though. custom Made by, I can not think of first name But Kilgore. It is Kathie's, Maker kept saying are you sure you want handle this small, she always said yes. But her hands are about size of mine when I was 8.

I have a knife by Cody Kilgore too! Too bad he's not still around, a very talented knife maker
