Looking for some larger blanks of mesquite burl. Need some pieces that I can get a 6x6 and or 8x8 turned hollow form out of. Would prefer something with bark inclusions. Contacted the only supplier I am aware of but they will not ship.

Thanks

James, I have some that dwarfs your size requirements. Bark inclusions are a given in most Mesquite burls I've seen. Now, you didn't say whether this is fresh dead or 50 year old dead stuff. Most of my stuff is old dead, totally dry, and very little bark. If you are interested, maybe if my new carbide blade fits onto my bandsaw, I'll cut a couple blanks if the blade stays together.. Your reply will cause me to get off my butte and replace the blade, then I'll be able to cut other stuff also.

I don't know your situation, but if you have a pickup with high clearance and like exploring your desert, when California Street meets Spring Street, go South West 3.19 miles. When you get there, either go north or south on the powerline road. You might get lucky and find some turning wood along it. I think there is Mesquite growing around that area. I also do not know the laws of NM, so don't know if you can pick any up. Also, the Rio Grande has plenty of wood along it's banks. Get to know some of those farmers, and I'm sure you will be swimming in wood pronto.

Jerry - I have cut a fair amount of roadside mesquite in my area over the years and have turned some nice crotches but rarely run across mesquite burl. I would be interested in what you have. I put out the 6x6 and 8x8 just to see what might be available. I can turn green or dry. A piece 8x10x10 would be nice. I do a lot of hollow forms with turquoise inlay bases on Pueblo forms.

here is an example of my work in honey locust burl mountain juniper.

I can cut in half if you are interested. Let me know and I will get it posted. Thanks.

Over the weekend I'll try and put the blade on my saw, and cut some stuff just to make it smaller and give myself some more room. If someone has what you want, do not wait for me. I'm like the tortoise and hare. Even with four feet, I'm still slow.

What @BandR is equivilant to what I have. Some variance, but not too different....... Jerry (in Tucson)

If you think you would like to come out to Tucson, I'll take you into the desert and you can collect a lot of stumps with burl in it in just under 3-4 hours after being in Tucson. Or, you could take highway 60 west to Springerville, Arizona between December 5 through 13th. I'll be Elk hunting and can bring up some wood for you, plus maybe get some Aspen burl also..The earlier the better as if I get my kill early, I'll be heading home. ........... Jerry (in Tucson)
