Hopefully this is a simple question. Jerry ( @Nubsnstubs ) sent me some cholla slices and I'm pretty sure mesquite slices. I've started a box with them and was wondering what works best for the finish on the mesquite. The reason I ask is it feels really smooth and nearly without pores (or maybe just really tiny pores) after just sanding to 320. So those who have worked with mesquite before, what's your recommended finish method? I would prefer a soft, warm look, not a glossy shiny thick finish look. Thanks.

ya cant really go wrong whatever you use, oil finishes are good, danish oil gives a low gloss, if they are cross-grain slices, it might darken the wood too much for your taste though...

Raw tung oil gives the finish you describe without extreme darkening. It is a bit shiny if you add to may coats. You can cut it with some beeswax for the exact finis you describe.
