My neighbor has a row of red pines across the road from our place and a few of them have been dying. I was able to get 3 butt logs and one second tier log - about 12-14 inches diameter and have been making mostly 2x4s and 1x8s out of them with the somewhat hazy purpose of making a playhouse or chicken coop for our daughter. I feel like a real sawyer doing this kind of stuff. Mostly I use the mill to slab up hardwoods to make turning blanks.

I don't have pictures of the finished lumber because I embarrassed at my slovenly stickering and stacking. It is stickered and stacked, but it's no very neat or level.

Of course, the one picture I have is of the one second tier log I milled which was pretty ugly but I did get several 1x8s from it.

I guy on another forum lives out west and routinely cuts logs like this into firewood. I cringe. How would you like to mill one of these? Log.webp

Don't be embarrassed!! All wood pictures are eye candy to us. Bring them on. We may have some great suggestions to help you along!!

looks like a nice chunk of western larch. Big logs produce lumber fast. That one looks like it could be problem- wind shake. Big equipment is needed for big logs.

Sticker secret- start with cants or? spaced at sticker spread desired. make those cants level. makes it easy from there on. if not level- lumber will not be straight.
