Our turning club has Matt Monaco coming for a weekend in September and he requested some specific blanks for his workshops. So Friday we got a couple logs on the mill and made blanks.

Cherry 2x10 blanks for a platter class and maple 8x3 blanks for a "pottery" class. Sealed and stacked with air space for drying. The 2x10 blanks have the corners cut off so they will swing on a 12 inch lathe.

Cool. Did you cut the corners off on the mill posted and how long have you or someone had the mill? ............ Nubs

No, we cut slabs the length of the log and used my chop saw to cut the blanks to length and cut off the corners.

I've had the mill since 2021, I think. It might have been early '22.

Great job!

Just a suggestion, and not sure if it's practical for you in the future, or not?

I would suggest slabbing the wood now, like you've done, but maybe consider waiting before cutting into blanks for the class. The end checking potential, goes up exponentially, in my experience, with the individual blanks vs. leaving a plank and only dealing with end checking on the plank during the drying process. I know you sealed them all now, but might save you some time and headaches only having to seal up the ends of the plank, then cutting to size at a later date.

Just a thought anyway.............If it works out for you, then all good!

BTW - I had a class with Matt Monaco. One of the best masters of the skew you will ever see working it.
