I picked this walnut gun stock up years ago at a garage sale and refinished it I really don’t have a gun to put it on. I have decided to make a nice lamp with it so I need a nice contrasting round about 10 inches in diameter to glue it to as a base. I’m thinking a nice cherry would be nice as a base. If anyone has a good idea please let me know and if you have a piece that would work that would be super.

I have seen a few gun butt lamps. I only was able to handle two of them. One had lighting all thread, threaded into the gun stock and through the base with recessed cup on the bottom to have a locking washer and nut. Guy said the gun stock hole was tight and just thread the all thread into it, and did the same on the other end for the light socket to mount to.

I'd cut a piece of Black cherry or ash cookie, about 2-2.5" thick and retain the natural bark edge. When the cookie splits, let it cure. Then remove it from the lamp, butterfly the crack with contrasting color (maybe walnut to match the butt) and pour the crack with river blue epoxy (maybe drop in a few pebbles / stones for contrast).

Can cut you a 10ish” cherry cookie, how thick you like? Started processing this pile mon but rained out tue, wed and today, will get back to it when the sun returns.

That piece is gorgeous with the grain flow and the hint of fan feather crotch. It actually reminds me of a bust (neck with shoulder wings). This should be on a pedestal which would be raised up off the surfaced/suspended on a rod (bronze or oiled rubbed iron) with a circular base (could be same material as the rod or with natural stone)- lifted off the base and not sit on it. Like a hint of Rodin-Giacometti.

This to me should be treated more of a sculpture as a stand alone as it has natural compositional elements given to us by Mother Nature. If you can envisioned this as an all statuary marble stone (but a wood version of it), it would be like a “Greek or Roman” sculpture. IMHO.

That's a beautiful piece of wood. I don't have a use for it but seems like waste to use it as a lamp. IMHO.
It will really set my room off I think which has many trophy’s in it
