I found myself in need of a mid size marking gauge for milling rough lumber (by hand of course) so I mocked this up. It needs a better screw and knob as well as some overall refinement but I'll likely build a new one and still use this one.

It's cherry, mahogany and curly pear. The knife is O1 steel and needs a bit more camber before I harden the cutting edge. it's pretty hefty and can mark up to about 20" wide.

I should have taken pictures along the way but it was a little de-stress project and I was so in the zone I just busted it out in a couple hrs.

It has a captive block of cherry inside the gauge that applies pressure to the beam when the screw is tightened.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice! One thought, knurled brass thumb screw.

Yeah, I'm thinking that would be nice too. I wish I knew a machinist capable of making em!

I love it Tom. That's just fantastic. I can see why this was a stress buster. I know how much you love the hand tools and this will definitely be a welcome addition to your collection. Awesome work my friend.

Thanks Kenbo, I really needed a relaxing day back in the shop.

It's got me wanting to build a few more with improvements from what I learned from this one. The game changes a bit with a beam that long AND a knife. The next one will have an oval beam and a much longer captive locking pad. That should make a decent design an excellent one. I'm then going to downsize that to a smaller gauge.

All that will have to wait until I get Joe's scrub and smoother planes built though :)

Cool! A jumbo marking gauge, Looks Great! I love making jigs and handy tools as well.

Tom - Thats awesome. I can see a final version in Mahogany or or curly cherry that would be an heirloom.

Well, part of the reason I have to build Joe's planes first is because I'm planning to use some of the left over rosewood :yipee:
