I got this little toy for my kids for ~$40:



It works so I tried on an endgrain sample I had. These are literally the first pictures I took:

Are they water rated? Looks like something you could take out in the field. Can just picture it now, Paolo sanding branch stubs on street trees to take pictures "in the field".

Ah ah ah. I just need a portable sander and then I will do it :D

It's a cheap toy, I don't think it can hold water. But you can make videos as you zoom in from far focus (many meters) to full magnification, so you could get both botanic ID and endgrain in just one piece of information :D
