A good friend of mine showed me an old axe of his that he hasn’t used in years. Was thinking about buying it off him aince I absolutely love old tools especially axes. Its an old Collins Bonded axe. Was just wondering if any of the tool aficionados could weigh in and let me know what its worth. I tried doing my own research and the prices I’ve seen vary so much I don’t know what to think. I’ve seen anything from $15 all the way to $400.

Other than pitting and some mushrooming in the poll it looks like its in really good condition. With any luck there might be a restoration thread in the near future.

Looks like powder post Beatles did a number on the handle. To me tools like that I try and buy cheap because of the work you have to put into them, it's more a labor of love really. Kinda depends on if you really want it or not. Stuff like that can be found in garage sales and estate sales for $10 to $15.

In our area, $2-7 dollars for most common axes, and they often have decent handles. Being a Collins, maybe double that price but $25 would be my limit. Double headed go for $10-20 or more is a quality name. Polaski's are similar in price. Now for hewing axes, they start at $40 and usually go for $75 - 100. They are a bit more rare in these parts.

Supply and demand thing.
