What are you planning on doing with a block that size? I've only turned something 16" diameter, something this big would be a struggle!

lol matt it was a stuggle putting it on the table. i just findem not turn them :rotflmao3::rotflmao3::rotflmao3:

Sweet looking block of wood there, Duck!

I wouldn't suggest a single bowl from that block... Endgrain bowls tend to fare poorly over the long haul... if they survive the drying process. That could be a monster hollowform, but I don't have the tooling to do it... My lathe could swing it, but I don't have the rest of the doodads needed to hollow something 19" in diameter. There are certainly some folks around here who are capable of that kinda thing though... I look forward to seeing what comes of it.

I'd cut it in half right at the pith line and get 2 hollows out of it! :sarcastic: Beautiful stuff there. :good::good2:

Dave - I just want to come and camp in the Magical Maple Forest! - You have some of the most beautiful wood I have seen growing there. Maple abounds up here but its all pretty plain Jane.

How wet is it? I will make you a bowl out of it if you post a picture of your wife's expression when you put it in the middle of the table... :sarcastic:

Doc is right though. The odds of it surviving the drying process in that size with pith are pretty slim.

I would quarter it and make 4 absolutely stunning vases / hollow forms. If you do that I would do another trade - I turn you one and keep one...

scott i just cut it down today i knew that thing was the same it had hunderds of knarly burl looking balls all over its small branches just like the other.dont know what they are a bugs or what but what ever it is its working :good: they got me working night shift right now. so i get board with all that day time to play with:mocking::mocking:. theres a few more bigger ones there . there time will come. lol i have no intensions of rollin that beast into the post office they would chase me down the street :rofl::rofl: it will get cut up into hollow forms. im sure some of this buety will be heading to many places starting with ny. now got to go to work . duck

That thing would require, first some trimming, and then the 4224B, and even then it would be a challenge. SSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pretty though.

Wow! You've got a pretty block! Wish I had an ugly maple log like that to make gunstocks from... Ambrosia maple looks like natural camo after the stock is finished.

I agree with you. If the dimensions were side grain I would eat it up for cored bowls. You could do cored hollowforms the end grain would show on each one.
Cutting blocks for turning is not always easy as eveyone has different uses for each particular block.I coud probably get at least 6 end grain hollow forms from this block and they would show the awesome endgrain as it is
Shipping might hurt on something this green.

Wowsers. That's a big blank. It would make for some awesome pieces off the lathe and/or one giant hernia.
