Today I got all my edges straight and square, so I got it ready for dowels. Since it's over 1 1/2" thick right now, instead of putting in just one row of dowels, I set it up for two rows. The dowels in the edges are dowels that are used to align the pieces, then are removed and the regulars are glued in, with the edges left dry on the dowel side. IMG_7210.webp
These are the dowels. They are cut halfway on one end, rotate 90 degrees and cut halfway. They become loose in the dowel hole and are easy to remove. IMG_7213.webp


This is my Pacco Horizontal borer I've used for drilling all dowel holes since '86. I got it about 6 years before I quit my business in 1992. Just about that same time, I ordered a bag of dowels that amounted to close to 13,000 of them. Since then, I've used all but a 5 gallon can of them and am working on trying to use all of them. They are used for all face frames, table tops, door panels and other things that are more sturdy when a dowel is used rather than just two edges butting together with glue.

I would have more pictures, but my glue bottle is in my truck and it's in the shop trying to get my AC to work. This is the third day now that I've had no transportation. (BOO HOO) :lol2: ............. Nubs

That's quite a reach to get that glue bottle! Here's to working ac in July!

Hey man, I still do work away from the house. My truck was taken in on Monday to get the AC work DONE on Monday. My glue and about 3 more tools I need were in the truck. Monday was going to be a holiday for me, so didn't worry or even question if I was going to need the tools or supplies. I was called about 4:45 PM and told that another vehicle took more time than they had expected, and would get to mine on Tuesday. On Wednesday, about 3 PM I called and was told they can not figure out the issue. I told them I'll be in Thursday morning about 8:30 to pick it up.
So there. :sofa: ............... Nubs

Sounds typical for mechanic work in my area too.

I got it glued up. Will keep it in the clamps till tomorrow morning, giving it plenty of time to cure. This is the bottom side seen. It's worse than the top, but there is one area on the left side that is rotten, and needs a filler piece of wood. I wish I hadn't cut up all the scraps as there would have been about 3 pieces that would have filled in enough to not look like a flaw.
There is a lot of punk, voids and other things I'm going to fill in order to get a flat solid surface. Right now, it closer to 38" long at the left side, but where the crotch area is, it's about 35?. I'm going to be allowed by the customer to cut it short if necessary, otherwise I'll have to do a fill. That might not be too bad, or if her husband has a say, leave it like it is because, "It's wood, and wood has all kinds of flaws'.

Below are a couple pictures of 3 slabs on my PV. The size of the smaller one is 1 1/2" x 30 x 40 at the top and from the left side of the piece. The bottom is 20" and the shorter side is 30". I hope that makes sense. IMG_7216.webp

This picture is of a matched pair that is 1 5/8" x 13 an 12" wide x 50 long. I believe this is Foothills Palo Verde. It's a natural grown tree that finally got in a homeowners way. It's common along the perimeter of the Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, and possibly all the other mountains in the Sonoran Desert. IMG_7215.webp
These pictures are posted mostly for @Pops to get a visual of how Palo Verde colors are distributed in the wood. It's pretty bland near the edges, but near the center, if it is crotched, it gets really colorful like the wood I'm using for this table. Mexican Blue, a name not much used anymore as it's racist, is Parkinsonia florida and has the best color of the Palo Verde's. That's my choice of Palo Verde, but the others are OK nut not first choice. @Pops, later today I'll get pictures and a price of what I have left over, and if you want it, it'' be yours. ............... Yessir I would be interested in any scrap pieces in whatever colors you have in the size range of cork stoppers etc etc. No rush over the weekend.

Ok, cork stoppers. Is that wine stoppers about 3/4" od x 1 1/2" long? ............. You asked about 1 x 36" long in your pm. Is that something you still want, or were you just curious? It sound like pen blanks are what you're looking for as they are about diameter you would need for stoppers. How close am I to interpreting your question. None of the wood is without imperfections as you would need to stabilize and fill cracks, voids and other things.
Tell me how many you need, and I'll get a box made up with the quantity you want. If pen blanks will work, 1 buck each, and minimum of 10, plus postage. ............ Nubs
