Momentary loss of concentration, tool hit the finished spinning piece, broke off at the nub and bounced to the floor. Only my ego was hurt.

I think we've all had those pieces that are good reminders to pay attention/be safe...

I had a little over half a honey locust bowl by my lathe for several years as my reminder to always wear my face shield when turning. (Though I don't for things like pens and stoppers.) I was finish turning the dried bowl and was making one final pass and that final pass uncovered a hidden check through the blank. If it weren't for my face shield, it would have hit me right in the eye...

Wow John, broken wood flying is one thing but metal flying could have had such bad results. Looks like the tool tip broke beyond the treated portion. Is that the case or can you salvage the tool? I broke one of my brother's guage tips and it turned out to be a $400 tool. So, since then I use just old school cheapies when in his shop.

I hope you consider saving the turning.

Haven’t blown one up in a long time, usually would just throw it away, grab another and start anew. Since Mark mentioned saving it, thought I’d turn a small bowl from it and send it to him. What’s the odds…

The tool didn’t break, it’s a secondary bevel.

Wound up where it should have after all.
