I recently threw away a bunch of scraps of black walnut that probably would have made several hundred pen blanks. If I were to keep a scrap box of pen blanks, what size should they be?

The standard size for the most common type of pen is 3/4" × 3/4" × 6". There's a list of standard blank sizes for a lot of different projects here:

I need to clean out a scrap box. What would the value be of 100 walnut blanks? Maybe some cherry pieces in there.

Not a lot to be honest. Hard to sell them unless they are really nice/figured or exotic

I don't turn pens myself, but a friend of mine does, and I pass on to him various pieces of interesting wood that come into my hands. He's quite clear that what he wants is wood with character -- burl, or strong grain patterns, or spalting, or rich color. I don't think he'd be interested in black walnut unless it had spalting, or flame, or chatoyance, or the patterns you sometimes see in crotchwood. . . something like that. I don't know if his preference is typical, but from what I've read on this site, it's probably fairly common.

I myself am a scrollsawyer, and I routinely use scrap wood as small as 3"×5"×3/4", or 3"×3"×1". If your scraps are that size or larger, I could use them, as long as they're not too checked or knotholed or otherwise messed up. But I can't do much with pen blanks.

If all else fails, black walnut is good for smoking meat, and cherry's even better.
