Looking for your 0.02 on options. After an eye mishap my husband is adamant that we upgrade our sawdust setup. I am currently using a cyclone separator on a 5 gallon bucket for chips and am blowing the dust out of the shop with a leaf blower.

The shop size is 460 square feet. It is an attached two car garage with one window and a door leading to the mudroom.

I don't mind moving the cyclone and would like to avoid ductwork if possible. All our machines are small and are frequently moved around anyways.

I was looking at either Oneida or Clear Vue. Does anyone have a portable option through either of them and how do you like it?

I have a corsi rosenthal box made with a Lasko fan, but doubt it is going to do much for 460 square feet. Ive been on Bill Pentz's website. The information is great, but a bit overwhelming. 20260418_071058.jpg

I bought my dust collector used and it was mounted on a thick plywood board on 4 heavy duty casters. Great portability! Chuck

What kind of collector do you have? I wonder if the air cleaner aspect matters more than what type of chip collector is used.

It does matter more. To a point. You need good suction for larger chips but the dust goes in even with slow current. For the larger chips you need more power. I met a German woodworker who was adamant, that the nozzle placement of the suction tube was more important than its power. He had a clip on it that fit his turning tools. It was always directly at the cutting edge. He had the cleanest shop I had ever seen.

If you are upgrading, the Oneida site has lots of good info. Keep in mind that separators do a great job of keeping the mess down but don’t get those small particles that get in the lungs are what is hazardous.

Good DC= HP. Cyclone makes filters last much longer . It collects big stuff. Filter protects lungs. Good DC should be everyone's first tool purchase. Never is though.
I started with 1.5 hp with garbage can cyclone. Worked alright. Moving tool to tool got old.
I then converted to 3.5 hp pennstate cyclone. It will suck the hair off the dog. Amazing how cyclone collects most waste. When I clean filters I get about a gallon of flour fine dust.
To really make it work you at least need a garbage can cyclone.

I keep everything clean, but there is a fine layer of walnut dust on everything. We also plan on getting a dog and walnut is my main wood, so that is also a concern.

We have standard outlets in the garage, how many hp until we have to get 220v installed?

I have the Oneida SuperCell (their small 14g one) and can definitely recommend it. As said above, the Oneida site has some really good planning information. I did mount mine on a wall in a corner (I'd recommend putting some acoustic foam on the walls behind it to reduce noise) - I felt like it was easier to use their hoses to manage multiple mobile tools than to move the DC around.

I've posted on this site before the simple hose distribution box I built to avoid complicated ducting. It allows me to keep hoses on a couple of more stationary tools (lathe, bandsaw) but also to support a mobile table saw, etc. I'll see if I can find that and link it, but the basic gist is that I run a section of their 4" hose to the box, from which come several 4" and 2.5" hoses (one of which is long for using as a vacuum or for supporting a table saw/tool from further away). I slide the main hose over the hose I want to use. Works well for me and minimizes the space I needed for ducting - and also prevents pulling a vacuum on unused ducting.

If you have a fine layer of walnut dust on things, I would be more worried about your lungs than a dog but worrying about both is warranted. What has settled is the nasty stuff that was floating in the air.

From my review when deciding on what collector to get, 2hp is where most 220v start.

if you keep the shop clean, consider building an air scrubber (lots of videos on YouTube) to remove that floating dust.
