Hey everyone, i wanted to show off a block that was given to me today and described as Pterocarpus tinctorius, though since information and pictures of that species are hard to come by online i was wondering if anyone with experience with it might be able to advise on whether it looks like what it purports to be?

The only other timber i've got that looks and feels similar is pterocarpus santalinus, but this piece seems way too big for that to be a possibility

Pictures are pretty accurate colour wise, but it can appear darker depending on the light as well

Looks more like a dalbergia. Got any end grain shots?

Do you have Santalinus? Got any pics of that?

Tinctorius is unlikely in my opinion. @Mr. Peet will have more to say.

I can take some end grain shots tomorrow and yes! i do have a small piece of santalinus, though again, i'll have to wait till tomorrow before i can get some end grain shots of it for you

Though these ones at least show how dramatic the oxidization in santalinus can be.
They were taken about 3 months apart with the timber freshly surfaced in the first shots

The open / bigger pores and face grain look to match Pterocarpus.

The face grain pores look small and the wood looks smooth. I would not think Pterocarpus based on these pictures. End grain shots will help. What kind of smell do you get when working it? Does it react to blacklight?

I think the pores in the supposed tinctorius piece look more coarse than most dalbergias i've come across, and its definitely not as heavy or glassy as them.
I dont have a black light to test with, but i've taken some end grain photos and some extra face grain pics that might be of assistance

Scent wise, its pretty minimal to my nose at least ...there's possibly a very faint sweetness in there, but overall it just has that slightly dusty/mildly spicy smell that narra gives off

Here's the end grain pics, the smaller block is the one i purchased as p. santalinus, and the bigger is what was given to me as p. tinctorius

Pictures make all the difference. Those are better and show structure better. Looks like a Ptercarpus. That is about as far as I can go.
