Is that your finger?

boxes- lots of things are boxes- cabinetsw are boxes, dressers are boxes. you can make them as simple or complicated as you want. great way to show off nice wood. Most have function as a major bonus.

Agree, I caught the box bug thanks to Mike and Ray. I think like most things, it takes a few tries to work out the bugs and once you do and start to make what you think are pretty good ones, you sort of want to stick to it - at least for a while.

And guitars (not that I make them any more). The process is really fascinating and the required attention to detail is challenging.

I’d have to agree with Doug and Mike, boxes have always been a favorite of mine. Our daughter has a large collection of mine because boxes were a Christmas present tradition.

Basket Illusions. I tend to get bored with turning the same old bowls, hollow forms, etc. and illusion pieces allow me to express what little bit of artistic ability I have.

As I do all of the inking and burning in the basement, it gives me something to work on when I don't have time to spend at the lathe. I also find it very relaxing to do some of the repetitive burning late at night with some music in my ear buds. Helps blank the mind before I go to bed.

For me I think a turning because it can usually be finished in one day. Next would be scroll saw work because I can sit down and just relaxe while doing the work. As I age my back prevents me from standing for long periods of time. Then boxes would be on the list too because its a small easy to handle project that doesn't take a lot of materials. Cutting boards also, pretty simple and straight forward. I guess for me there are many, an a.d.d. mind gets bored pretty easy.

In woodturning, if I can make a tool that will make turning wood a lot safer and easier, then I appreciate the effort I put into it. I invented woodturning 3 tools and Patented one. It is my opinion that they make turning a lot safer than without them. My mistake was thinking that they would be a welcomed tool in the turning world, but the expectations have been a big disappointment. So, when I do make something it is mostly for my benefit unless it's a paying customer using their design or requirement. ............... Nubs

I also agree with Mike and Doug about making boxes. I like that I can build a nice simple box in a day, with some very interesting woods. I like that it's quick too, because I usually lose interest in a project that takes more than a day or two - then it becomes a chore to finish.
Although as of late my boxes have become more and more intricate and challenging to build, as I seem to have to keep pushing my abilities and boundaries with crazy ideas. I guess that's why it's fun.

"I like that I can build a nice simple box in a day," :saw:

I'm envious. It takes me several days just to get the pieces organized, mostly sized to the same dimensions, and then cut out the box sides and lid parts. Then I sand and finish the inside surfaces because I find it's easier that way. Then gluing takes a couple more days because I only have one frame clamp. And then I have to sand and finish the outside. But it's all good because for most those steps I can stop and start any time I feel like it.

I cannot just build one. Well, a bench or dresser but boxes it has to be at least 2, preferably 10 or more. I like the challenge, the process and getting to experiment on different woods and ideas efficiently. Learn what works and doesn't. Make great Christmas presents. Small and large.
