Was going to post in the 'Garden' section since the woods and fields were my 'backyard' and stomping grounds when I was growing up.

Bottom line ..... They're Here!
Mushrooms.png

Recent 80 deg days caused these to pop a little early for our area. These are a little dried up (broken off) but still fresh. Now we're in a cold spell, so I'll wait a couple of days after it heats back up and go out again. These are Grays and the Yellow should follow shortly.

Morel mushrooms
Bingo! We have a winner!. And they are so good! Crappie should be biting soon. As I said before, fry them up with a couple of fresh caught crappie and a couple of beers and I'm in heaven (probably the closest I'll ever get lol).

Had some friends just post about their start of harvest. Wifey asked, why didn't I go out and pick. Reply - I didn't want to get shot!

I tried them a long time ago and didn't care for them. Need to get some and try again. See them but don't pick them. They've popped here but this cold spell the last couple days probably shut them down. Gonna get warm again so should be back. Couple buddies here have gotten over 100 a day earlier this week

This area I go is 'No Hunting'. I hunt turkey on public land and they have a rule than non-hunters aren't allowed in the woods until 1:00PM. Some people don't abide by it though.

That's the only mushroom I feel confident enough in ID'ing that I'd eat it.
I use to be able to eat Hen of the Woods years ago, but every time now that I try them, I get intense gastro bloating and pain. Chicken of the Woods is OK just not much flavor.

How were you cooking them? Butter, lard and bacon grease are my big 3.

Good to see you finding some. We've been too cold until today, but had full sun and 74°. Should be popping around here shortly.

We had 19 degrees this morning, near 50 for the day. Grass just turning a bit green. So I was thinking next 2 weeks here should be a good start to schroom season.

The 4" of rain and 60° temps last week turned the corner for us. Grass is starting to get tall here. Redbuds are starting to bloom which is a phenology indicator for morels.

You know that's the weird thing this year. Redbud started to bloom late March. I checked a couple of easy spots with no luck. The Dogwood bloomed April 1st. Usually they are about three weeks later. We've had up/down weather this Spring. 70/80s for a few days, the 40s/50s. These that I found were grays, 1st to pop, came up after that 1st heatup. Hopefully this week/next week will be the main flush.

Unfortunately the tulips all have to be behind fencing to keep the deer from them.
