I am offering my last piece of impossible to find old Hawaiian “lama” ebony (diospyros sandwicensis) which is the same genus as ebony and persimmons; endemic to Hawaii. My direct logger contacts in Hawaii have told me it is very difficult and very hard to find Hawaiian “lama” ebony compare to sandalwood. I only happened to come into this because a Hawaiian luthier/woodworker that I know had these old stock bits in their collection- used for rosettes and graft marquetry inlays on ukulele’s. This came from the big island and this was harvested about 20 years ago. This is well season and it is air dried, well seasoned and about 8% moisture content. The sapwood, which is the “lama” represents “enlightenment”- the sacred part of the tree in the Hawaiian culture and used for religious purposes: altars. The sapwood color tone is rustic/dusty “khaki-beige-cream. The tree’s tend to be small in diameter and when I had stock they ranged anywhere from 4-10” in diameter.

The first piece for sale I was saving to use to carve an organic platter. Dimensions are approximately 17-1/4” x 6-4.75” x 1.75”-1” thick. See photo’s. Please note these were rough cut as I have received them. This piece is solid with just early spalt stage- nothing soft or punky. There are natural multiple pin holes which is the nature of lama and could easily be filled with ebony dust/cyano or your crush turquoise or any filling you desire. Physical weight is 2.37 pounds.

I used a flashed where it looks yellow and the natural color w/o flash was taken w/ fluorescent over head studio lighting.

$ 110 plus shipping from the east coast.

Since you sold the "lama" pieces I guess you will be throwing away that ugly koa chunk you used as a background, isn't it? ;)

Nothing get’s passed you Paolo @chatometry - good eye picking up on that piece being acacia koa. Molto bene! I just happened to have that out and it looked like it would make a good back drop. It is a 4/4 piece blonde “AAA” HI koa intended for 2 book-match acoustic backs (or top).

Grazie,

Arn
