Hi all,

We recently took on a bit of a risky but rewarding project in the workshop - bringing an old, moldy bowl blank back to life. It had been sitting around for quite a while and didn’t look like much at first, but we decided to see what could be salvaged. After carefully cutting away the worst areas and working through the turning process, we were really surprised by the character of the wood. There were some interesting grain patterns and textures hiding beneath the surface, and it turned into a piece with far more personality than we expected.

We filmed the whole process, from the initial inspection right through to the final finish, and have included the YouTube video if anyone’s interested in seeing how it all came together. We’re always looking to improve, so feel free to share any advice, tips, or even what you might have done differently - we’d genuinely appreciate the feedback!

Like the coloring. The shape....looks more art than utility. Beech is such a challenge to find the right level of spalt without losing the soundness. Glad you decided to give it a go.

Great bowl! Love the figure and spalt and have always liked that shape! Was moving some of my office stash to my storehouse stash on Monday and found a piece that I had hoped that would spalt a little more and rescue it like y'all did. It did spalt more - a lot. Could poke my finger into it up to the knuckle. Dang!

Always good to hear from you Mike! Glad you liked the bowl - the figure and spalting really made the piece special. Sounds like your stash piece went a little too far in the other direction though! There’s a fine line between “beautifully spalted” and “compost” sometimes!

We hope you have all subscribed! We are pumping out one video a week!

Next time you find an old nasty piece like that ship it off to me I'll take care of it for you.

It's a real beauty!
