Nephew got to hunt what I always wanted to when I lived in Wisconsin - where it's prohibited.

Wyoming has a limited sandhill crane season and nephew was in the right place at the right time (with all the required permits and license).

I've never had the opportunity to try crane, but it is refered to as the title says. Lean rich meat that tastes more similar to beef than bird.

Anybody else ever had sandhill crane? Does it live up to its moniker?

I have not. Now I want some…

See them to west and in Mt. No seasons here that I know of. Great video out there of a grizzly wanted to take one on. Grizzly lost.

Many times!! And yes, they are the ribeyes in the sky. I liked sears them in a pan with some Montreal Steak seasoning. They also make a very large and cool mount. I delivered one yesterday to a client. It was quite a small one. Hunting them is quite the experience. We hunt them in fields using sock or silhouette decoys. As they approach you kind of freak out cuz they're so loud and look so huge. And when "take 'em" is finally hollered and you get one down and see how far they are still out. You're amazed. Gotta be careful sending a dog after a live cripple. It will do some damage with that bill

A friend got to hunt them in Texas a few years ago and said exact same thing about them. I had never heard that.

A few weeks ago I got to try some grouse from upper NW Wyoming and in the pan it looked like chunks of deer or elk. It was also incredible and 2 birds made a serving for almost 4. Very dark looking meat.
