Set of chisels

This set of un-handled Narex chisels has been sitting on the shelf while I thought about what to use for handles. I decided to make each one from a different wood, so from the top: African blackwood; cocobolo; lignum vitae; red heart; purple heart; hickory. Sanded to 320 grit, then buffed with Tripoli compound, white diamond compound, and carnauba wax. (Might have to re-apply wax to the ABW, it's looking a bit thin in places.)

Thanks - yes, I enjoyed it, I think I tried 3 or 4 different process sequences for the drilling, making the tenon, fitting the ferrule, shaping the hand grip, rounding the end. Right now I remember the one I decided works best, but I know that in a week I'll have forgotten which step should be first.

I know you aren’t asking, but I’m placing my fave on the Lignum.

Yeah - that or the redheart. Or the purpleheart. Or the cocobolo.

I might re-make the hickory, it was the first one I made and the handle was too long to fit in the tool roll. It was already epoxied onto the tang, so I sawed an inch off the end and used the disc sander to round it over.

Great idea and beautiful set of chisels. You were mentioning which wood is your favorite but I see there is slight variance in the shapes too. Do you find one shape fits your hand better than the others?

Aside from the few minutes putting silicone protectors on the sharp edges, I haven't done anything with them. It's too soon for me to know which (if any) is more comfortable in use.

FedEx will deliver my honing jig today - it's the type with a wide bottom roller, which I hope means I'll be able to keep it level on the stones as I'm sharpening the tools. I've had a cheap one for years, but the wheel is so narrow that it rocks as it rolls - not as useful as the advertising blurb promised.

News update: FedEx delivered, but not to me

The "photo evidence" shows it next to a house with brick walls - we have white vinyl siding. No idea where that house is, I hope they are nearby and kind enough to bring it over to me.

I have two mallets - one that I turned from a piece of a maple tree which was felled when sidewalks were installed on my street. I got the other in a swap here on WoodBarter several years ago.

Although ... I don't really want to start whacking these chisels with anything

Chisels are meant for a little whacking. Besides, think how good it would look with a matching mallet. Heavier denser wood the better and why Lignum Vitae is the preferred choice for mallets.

For reference the walnut mallet is a paltry 13 ounces. The Lignum Vitae 28.

Here's my maple mallet - weighs in at 14.5 ounces. As you can see, it's well used

Oh yes

It's been used to knock out centers from the lathe headstock, transfer punches to disassemble pens, nail sets, and center punches. (And I might have used it once or twice on a chisel!)

It feels like I've fallen victim to an eBay scammer. A visit to the nearby FedEx depot revealed that the tracking number entered into eBay is for a completely different shipment of 7 packages from a major retailer to an address in my town.

Could it have been a typo when the seller was entering it into eBay? Sure. But what are the chances that a typo would (a) match a valid active FedEx tracking number, and (b) the delivery address on that tracking number would be in the same zip code as mine (which made all the tracking updates look sufficiently genuine to not arouse suspicion)?

Slim odds, I would say. Requested a refund and reported suspicious seller activity.
