Snow blower refurbish.

A little more progress on the Ariens.
Time to work on the engine.
Carb needs to be pulled and replaced.

Pulled the throttle plate off.

Carb mounting bolts are off. Notice the crap thats in the very hard fuel line
View attachment 249814
New carb is on with a new gasket. Oooh Shiney!
View attachment 249815
I pulled the recoil starter and shroud and fished the fuel line behind the flywheel and the retaining clip. Flywheel ring gear looks good.
View attachment 249816
Left the fuel line long so I can trim it to size after the fuel tank is back on.
View attachment 249817
Hard to see but ther is a clip that holds the fuel line away from the flywheel.
View attachment 249818
Box with the Carb had the wrong primer line so I'll need to pick some up.
View attachment 249819
I also noticed that the recoil starter pully is cracked in 2 places, I'll need to find a replacement for it.

So work is to be continued. But it's getting there.
Is the recoil cast or plastic? Guess not a high priority being you have the plug and play option. Or are you pushing to get it done?

You'll be able to open a small engine repair business when you're done with this. Been a fun project for you though. My neighbor and I pulled the blower we share out yesterday, put some gas in it and fired it up. Started first pull. Hopefully we won't need it much like last winter. Mountains were supposed to get up to 20" last night and today. Nothing below 5500 ft though.
I was a small engine mechanic for many years about the time this thing was built, lol. It comes natural to me. It's just parts and actually this will be a fairly cheap refurbish. It'll be a great .aching if we ever get the big snow, otherwise when it's done I'll drain the fuel and put it in storage.

It's plastic, a new old stock one is on order off ebay. Nope no rush on this one, just tinkering when I have time. I actually have a Toro 2 stroke machine for the lighter snows. Never even fired it up last year because the snows where so light.

I have 3... use them so often not sure what they are. The Grey one is Craftsman, at my mother's just in case. Think a nephew used it 5 years ago. The orange and white, looks like your refurbish but with the smaller tires (with chains). Simplicity. Used it in 2005 maybe. Picked up a MTD red thing last spring, Tecumseh 8hp. Spent $100 getting some parts and tell myself I will use it since I spent money on it. Haven't put the plow on the Wheelhorse in about 3 or 4 years either. Been a real slacker, maybe this year will be different....

Of course I forgot to put this cooling shroud on. I think I've removed and re installed the fuel tank 5 times now because I keep missing things.

Got the new muffler on too.

New bolts, gasket, and lock tabs bent over.

The old muffler didn't have this tab and that's probably why it ccme loose. Old one may not have been oem, this one is.

It's almost done. I just have to trim the fuel line and instal an inline fuel filter. Start it and adjust the carb and then change the oil. Once everything is adjusted right I'll drain the fuel out for storage so it will be ready to go if i need it.

That box is very Cool. Might be able to make $5 back selling the box. See Patented 1975 on the outer rim of the starter pulley. Also cool. Looks like you are having fun along with bits of frustration. Hope it all goes well. That new muffler has the circa 1990 don't touch logo. Or is that logo more recent? I am really enjoying the fact you are preserving this classic piece of modern history. Now to get off my.....and get my old blower worked over.

Love the genuine Tecumseh part and packaging. Tecumseh snow blower engines were built in New Holstein Wi right down the road from Brillion where Ariens is located. Looks like this project is almost done…just in time for some snow tomorrow!

Well I finished up the snow thrower refurb today. Put an inline fuel filter in it, added some fuel and it started up with 3 pulls. Then I adjusted the carb and it purrs like a kitten.
Then I changed the oil. It wasn't terribly dirty but I don't know it's history. So clean oil it got. The new muffler is nice and quiet too. The new electric starter works great as well.

I put the heater box cover on and greased the chute pinion gear and sprayed all the u joints for the crank with chain lube. I greased every grease fitting I could find. Everything works as it should. I wiped it all down and put the belt cover back on.

I'm very happy with how this came out. Very cool for a 43 year old machine.

There is very little fuel in the tank, just enough to start it and adjust the carb, and it is treated with stabil. Then I closed the fuel valve and ran it until it stalled to clear the carburator of fuel.
This thing is now worth more than the $300 total that I have in it. But that's not why I refurbed it. I wanted a good heavy duty 2 stage snow thrower and this one is one of the best ever made.
At a later date I may install some tire chains.
