First off, I know this topic has been killed to death with billions of articles and threads and discussions about sharpening and everybody's favorite method what to use, etc etc etc. I'm not trying to start a yelling match or a war about it either so in all fairness I just want to ask one question:

Is there any negatives to using a surface grinder to lap the backs of plane irons and chisels?

Thanks

My own personal exp...
If you do that, it takes the "polish" off. Rust can set in much faster. Also, you are taking off way too much metal at one time to keep it properly balanced. (if you like a good balanced tool)
Question for you....how many times or how often would you be doing this?

This would be for the initial flattening the first time. It would take significantly less time than lapping on a plate.

Another thing I was thinking was taking a hand held die grinder with a polishing/deburr wheel to start.

Both methods would lead back to the lapping plate to get the final polish. I haven't quite decided what to do yet but I have a few hours between classes at night to hit that surface grinder.
