A different pattern of hand checkering, requested by a client in Chicago. This set is made of American holly. The hand cut checkering is started by creating two master lines crossing each other at a 3 to 1 ratio. After the master lines are cut, all the subsequent lines radiate out from those, creating the criss-cross pattern that eventually forms the finished diamonds. In this pattern, the client wanted bars instead of diamonds, which forms a unique pattern. In this scenario I've already started cutting lines based off one of the master lines. You can see the other master line laid out and crossing the group of freshly cut lines going in the other direction. The initial cuts are shallow, and simply create the layout. After that, the individual lines are deepened, one line at a time in alternating directions, a little bit at a time on each pass., until the entire pattern consists of the finished and pointed diamonds or, in this case a field of "bars" or, I guess you could say, double wide diamonds.
