@Texasstate and I have been discussing a trade for some of his dyed/stabilized knife/pistol blanks in exchange for some 1911 grips. Starting this thread in the open forum to stay within the rules.

@Texasstate here is a pic of a couple blanks I that are marked for a 1911 grip to give you an idea of the size I need (roughly 3/8" x 1-3/4" x 5" each scale or 1" x 1-3/4" x 5" for blocks I can resaw).

Received the package yesterday evening, the blanks look great! I'll start working on the grips this weekend.

Update...blanks are planed to initial thickness and grips laid out. On to drilling and shaping them, stayed tuned.

Wetted with denatured alcohol.

Will do, was laid up all day yesterday due to allergies. Haven't been this bad in a long time.

Kathie is miserable. Went down gorge and back Thursday, introduced coastal pollen, just for added misery.

Ok, finally feeling better and had some time this evening to work on the grips. They are drilled shaped, and rough sanded through 300 grit. Still have to cut the relief for the plunger tube on the left grip, the arc for the mag release on the right grip, and bevel both bottoms. After that, they will get sanded through 8,000 to 12,000 grit, then multiple coats of Tru-oil will be applied.

Today's progress....(some pics show the grips lightly wetted with denatured alcohol)










I think I've come up with a good name/description for them, but will wait until they are finished.

What sandpaper do you use once you get to those higher grits? 3M makes some really high grit stuff but it is expensive so I was wondering if you knew any cheaper alternatives.

I've not had to purchase any recently, but typically either 3M or Mirka Abranet (had some leftover from a rocking chair build).
