Trying to identify this species...

Staind red oak or some kind of oak. I have a figured white oak box here somewhere. Cody Kilgore traded me a knife for it. WOP finish almost exactly that color. Heaviest coved box I have made.

I've had the suggestion its red oak because of the open pores. That's what I like most about it. Rift sawn possibly?

Brad, an end grain shot may have helped too. If it was white oak, even in the face grain you often see rays and ray flecks. I like the Red oak idea most are going with but can't enlarge the picture enough to see flecks. As for species, most often, you are limited to family sub group, such as white oak group or red oak group.

I have been to many furniture stores that sell "red oak" bedroom sets. I have found more than once that the turned items were ash, not oak. Ash often turns cleaner and is cheaper in larger blank sizes. It stains very well to match other woods too.

Seen the same for Sassafras furniture. They would use ash for the bed posts being ash is stronger and stain them to match.
