Hey my dear friend gifted me this monstrosity so I can practice some carving. The wood is heavy and he thought it was from Malaysia, does anyone have a clue as to what it is? Tia!

Nope. Absolutely not. You will want to do some things if you want an accurate ID though.

Clean it up. Sand it so we can see what the wood looks like and not the grime covering it.

Get a good endgrain shot. Sand well up to finishing grits (or get a clean endgrain cut from a bladed tool. If you're a carver you should be able to do that with a knife) and make sure that you blow out any dust with compressed air. You can also use a damp cloth to get rid of most of the dust.

Hopefully these pictures are more useful. The dark wood planes nicely. The reddish wood seems incredibly soft and the end grain just rips out.

Don't know what it is but it doesn't look like a good candidate for carving due to this coarse grain...
Good to know! Didnt seem to be a good candidate for turning either unless it was user error or dull tools. Not sure what I will do with it then...

There’s enough wood there that you could add a waste block and turn that into a decent bowl if the segments didn’t blow apart . . .
