What free wood did you find today?

You only need to step on one of those seed balls in your bare feet and you'll remember sweet gum for the rest of your life. See that sidewalk? That's what I tried to avoid when I cut down the sweet gum in my front yard at our old house. The city was a "Tree City" unbeknownst to me, and they required a permit and inspection to cut down any tree. Since I didn't get either they fined me $150. One of those programs whose concept was good but implementation was absolutely horrible.
Some 25+ years ago, I was to start a large addition to a large church. To do the addition a number of trees had to be cut down. The edge of the church's property was the city/county limit - we have a metro style guvment. The guvment had just put into place a tree nazi division. But in doing due diligence I researched what needed to be done and I did it, I submitted plans, hired a civil engineer to count trees and locate them on the plan, and paid the $$$$ for a tree cutting permit. I was the first one to obtain that type of permit. Brought in a D8 and got the trees down and out of the way. A couple of days later, I got a registered letter that they were sending the police to arrest me and take me to jail for tree violations. Even though it was not posted anywhere, was not in any of the literature or instructions, and was not in the council passed ordinance, some bureaucrat, who did not like that she had to work with this new permit and a bit of a kook, deemed it necessary that there was also supposed to be an authorizing letter. Lets say the guy who owned the company had deep influence. She was suddenly found to be of want of a job.

Lucky for me, they, nor I, did not know at the time, that the addition was being built over a Mississippian Age village. It was discovered about 5 years after the project was completed.

Maybe I should add that in that climatic condition every single piece of wood was horribly cracked?
Maybe a humid place would not cause such effects.

I wish someone would have lost their job over my fiasco. Funny story - a year later this lady comes to our door. She running for mayor and asks if there's anything Benicia could do better etc. I proceeded to tell her the story of the Gum Tree Massacre complete with three part harmony and the 14 full color glossy photos with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one... and ended the story by telling her it was the stupidest program I'd ever seen and that when the city starts taking care of the trees on my property and starts repairing the sidewalks damaged by the tree roots etc they can start controlling which trees can be cut down or not. After she left, my wife asked if I knew who that was, I said no. She said that was the mayor, and she's the one who put the tree city thing into place. I felt better.

That's a helluva find, considering the first homo sapiens we know of didn't show up until 300,000 years ago, only about 300,000,000 years after the Mississippian Age. Ancestors of @Tclem? Even @Mike1950 ain't that old!

Alice would be proud-

Sorry about that - I meant Mississippian culture. From about 800 to 1600 ad. We were quite populous at that time. In fact my grandfather used to play on some of their temple mounds. On the next farm over from where He was born.on the original Natches Trace. That farm is called Old Town and has had many owners since, including Jimmy Buffett in the early 90's.

I was out on a bike ride on our local trail. There was a tree that had come down that they had to clear out of the way and they stacked the pieces by the trail. I have to riding 18 miles, I took the truck back and did some cardio weightlifting to get these guys in the truck. I left twice as much still there. They’re in the process of getting Anchorsealed.

Looks to be an Aspen...

When I rode past it, I thought it was White Birch. But when I got back to it, I was thinking Aspen.

Some months ago I posted this photo:

Unfortunately they cut it down :(

I got this chunk... I still need to figure out how to mill it to show the "fence" figure :D
