What free wood did you find today?

He's at the age where he wants to do physical things and loves swinging an axe. Technique for getting a lot done is lacking, but he is safe in handling an axe.

Working black locust, even wet, is not how I'd optimally start a beginner on the lathe, but that the wood he likes

Yeah. Next time try to get him hooked on maple. To be fair though children are like wives. They want something and annoy you till they get it.

Looks like a big kid, keep him happy and on your side...

Yeah, he's about 5'9", but skinny. Way too much energy, but it can be directed. Also getting interested in 'building muscle', so all this work is good.

He's a 'city' kid, but very interested in everything out in the country. I'm already training him to ID trees by bark and leaves, and loves working in the garden and foraging for food. Just wish they lived closer than WY.

Cutting up the walnut! Thanks to church friends, we got about 2 ricks of wood for Teddy to burn, and I'm not sure, but I'm hoping for 30 bowl blanks. The last two pictures are of a 12-year-old, Parker, splitting wood for the first time with a maul. He was getting the hang of it!

Congrats on the Walnut! Most valuable tree! Parker will get the hang of it -- glad he is out and helping! Chuck

Other day I decided to drop off a grave blanket I made for a former lawn client. Kids had not been out so I placed a spray at his stone and a 3' Blue spruce top to the left. He died Christmas day 4 years ago.

On my way home, spotted a spruce that had fallen in a friends yard. He had passed 25 years ago and a grand daughter now lives there. I backed up and into the driveway, went over and decided to help them clean up. I took a small branch tip and a small round that they had already cut. Now to figure out what to do with it.

Red Spruce, Picea rubens

12.5" x 12.5" x 4" Two blanks from the walnut tree. It's a shame I don't have a big enough lathe to accommodate them. I'll have to cut them down.

Not bad for a few tanks of gas and an hour of my life. Going back Tuesday for a big hickory and a couple big cherry logs. A couple cherry crotch pieces, a nice hickory blank and the flame box elder.
