What free wood did you find today?

@William Tanner
I'm not a turner so my opinion is worth less than what you paid for it. But I think that grain would look nice in one of those oval sideways bowls with the bark around the top edge, so the grain spreads out as you go down the side of the bowl, and then add a small trim band of something contrasting.

For not being a turner, that seems like a great suggestion.

I did receive a phone call from the city at 9:00 this morning. I could have had all of the wood but settled with what you see here. I only knew one of the guys and he said he still has the bowl I made for him years ago on display in his living room. The arborist said his best guess would be this is a green ash. Found the wood to be pretty plain so I didn’t take much. I was back home by 9:45.

Congrats! Love even a small load of wood in a pickup! You may be surprised by some of these chunks! Chuck

Still looking like a hackberry....

Thanks for all of the ideas.

@trc65 Had planned to do a hollow form and will do that with one of the pieces.

@Nubsnstubs Your idea is interesting, something I’ve never thought of. Will try to put that idea together in my mind. Description and photos will help. Thanks.

After this wood has dried some, and you think you are ready, I'll be more helpful than now. I'll look for my videos I made doing both of these. It will definitely help.

If I can't find them, I do have a couple more pieces that have that healed knot, so I could start another. ............ Jerry (in Tucson)

Those Japanese rasps are awesome, aren't they? I use one like that to shape my guitar necks and they will take off some wood.

@Mr. Peet Was a lot going on there when I picked up the wood and didn’t want to cause much of a distraction. Looked briefly for leaves but there were several kinds. Will try to get back down there. Will be in that area tomorrow morning and will make a stop. Thanks.
Went back to the scene this morning and took this photo.

I meant for this to be in the “What Did You Do In The Shop” thread. Dang.
I was thinking it might be the wrong thread, but I was thinking of the weekly question about unfinished projects. Not poking, ….just thinking of my projects.

Maybe one of our super moderators will unscrew me and place it in the correct thread.
