What free wood did you find today?

They are, Tom. It's just that I haven't ever seen those specks like that in the Hickory/Pecan wood I've purchased. I've only seen it in the tree I got and now your wood. Within a 30 mile radius of me there has to be a million or two pecan trees on farms. Only once have I ever seen the farms actually selling wood from the trees that were removed. I paid 5 dollars for a 6' long crotched stump that weighed at least 3-4 hundred pounds. It's use was for a climbing apparatus for my cats to use to get in and out of the house through a window.

Just for grins, here is another picture of mills I made for my friend in Missour from the Hickory tree he gave me. He is a Flintknapper like me and the right mill is just about as appropriate as it gets. I turned both mills, showed them to my wife, and she pointed out the arrowhead that I had not seen until she mentioned it. Boy, I was blind while turning them, I suppose.View attachment 242360......... Jerry (in Tucson)
Jerry, the guys in the turning club here say those specks are a sure sign of pecan. But then again, hickory grows here too.

Yeah, it sure seems hard to miss that arrowhead!

Aren’t Pecan trees in the Hickory tree family? Chuck
Yes, they are.

If you get a clean end grain shot, the pore structure can tell more. First glance to me, I think the "true hickories" versus the "pecan group". End grain could tell more. Until then....

Saw a post on FB Marketplace for free Walnut wood. Took a ride over to a 90+ year old lady’s house and she said a tree company took the tree down a couple years ago but never came back to haul the wood. So, her nephew posted it online and I was probably the 3rd person to show up.
Anyway, the other guys left all the crotch pieces and the bigger logs (18-20” dia).
I took the decent crotch pieces and one bigger trunk piece for maybe a 16” bowl. I’m planning to post these feather grain pieces as soon as I figure out what size FRB’s they can go into.

Maple burl actually found me today. Buddy dropped it off , said the guy he got it from was gonna burn it.
BUT, the kicker is, that he saved all the rest the guy had, and said I could have em all. Said one was gonna
have to be loaded with a fork lift.........OH YEAH!!!! Thank you burl god! ( I'm thinking it looks more like a cherry burl, but
I won't be able to tell until after the knee replacement heals) Thanks to the wife for taking the picture.

Got about 6 small apple, 3 dogwood and a couple persimmon trees in pots to plant. Also got a bunch of dogwood, chinkapin oak, chestnut oak, white oak and paw paw seedlings. A couple applexand the dogwood will be planted here at the house. Gonna give a couple apple away and the rest will be planted at the farm.

Congrats! Hoping your knee heals up very quickly! Looking forward to seeing you slice up this log / burl! Chuck

Thanks Chuck, appreciate that. I can't wait either, problem is that I will have a short window to get anything done
around the shop because I will be scheduling the other knee in about 4 weeks. I've got custom orders starting to pile
up for the fall and then I expect the other burls to start arriving around October sometime. Oh well, it will all be worth it
in the long run to be able to walk again decently around December. A good problem to have I know. Got my 1st physical therapy
this afternoon, and don't know what to expect. Hopefully the pt won't try body slamming me yet.

Congrats! I turned a bowl once from Butternut, and it was totally uninspiring. Turned nice, but was plain Jane all the way. Hope this log has an abundance of character! Chuck

Like working with it cuz it turns clean and sands quick. As usual with plain woods will qtr saw and use dyes to enhance if needed.

While I’m not generally a fan of oak, these pieces showed some potential spalting so I took a chance and grabbed two pieces. The spalting doesn’t go deep at all, but I still hope to get a few decent pieces out of it. I’m a glutton for punishment! Fingers crossed on cracking 🙏🤞

Why don't you put those pieces in a bag with the shavings for a couple months and see if the spalting gets more pronounced. I did that to a piece of Palo Verde once, and boy, did that produce spalting. Takes no effort in doing so. Just need to remember you have a bag of wood somewhere that might be better looking stuff than now. ........... Jerry(in Tucson)

Got this huge oak burl from someone who wanted it to go to a person that would make something from it rather than burn it, along with a couple of extra pieces. I was in the process of buying a wood stove from him when I noticed it. He said the tree was slated to be cut down as soon as the road restrictions lifted. And true to his word, he contacted me when it was ready to be picked up. I'll be making a couple of items for him and his wife once my shop is done. :)
