What free wood did you find today?

Got this huge oak burl from someone who wanted it to go to a person that would make something from it rather than burn it, along with a couple of extra pieces. I was in the process of buying a wood stove from him when I noticed it. He said the tree was slated to be cut down as soon as the road restrictions lifted. And true to his word, he contacted me when it was ready to be picked up. I'll be making a couple of items for him and his wife once my shop is done. :)

Woke up today to find out it was Christmas in June!

Got this box from VA (that is somewhere up near the Right Coast area me thinks) - yes you Eric. Contained some beautimous hickory (and other goodies). Pic does not capture the curl very well. I can get to really liking hickory if it all looked like this! Technically, I didn't "find" it - well I did find it on my desk coming back from a jobsite visit - so that qualifies. Thank you friend!

I just got this flash image of Eric ( @Eric Rorabaugh ) in a bright green fuzzy jumpsuit and a pointy hat, carrying a big sack over his shoulder and sneaking into people's houses.
Great, now I see it too.....however, think it was the PA Eric....

Cool. Looks a lot like Serviceberry...you said hickory....think I'd be able to see the ring porous details, but I can't.

Nice haul. Be interesting to see, once you clean it up, whether the end grain has hexagonal pith

No was in the open, tree split at the crotch and this is what fell last summer and was transported to Bud’s wood yard, never got back to it til today.

Will fine sand and check the pith when I break it down, don’t see a hex now.

That chunk with the off center pith would make a great hollow form! I have heard that carvers like catalpa, never worked with it myself....

That’s what I was thinking when cutting into one this morn. Cut a test blank each 1/4 sawn flat sawn to track movement while drying before getting into the rest of it… like butternut but softer, cuts clean and easy.

Woodturning student was over last Wed turning his third Norfolk Island Pine (NIP) piece remarking how much he liked the wood. I only had 5 pieces left to make lamp shades & vases with so I wasn't parting with any.
There has been only one NIP tree down this year so far, it's been scarce.
I told him we need more & that the universe provides so I ordered some saying, "Universe, we need a bunch of NIP 6" to 13" diameter! Order placed."
4 hours later my lady & I were picking up a friend & across the street from his house was a fresh cut pile of NIP!!! Score!!!
Trailer loaded, dumped in yard to trim it down. Logs will be cut to size. Left over sack of knots! :good2:
