What free wood did you find today?

the other piece is an odd fossilized "carbonized" wood, like stone, not agatized petrified wood, but rather similar to coal.

appears the ship date from Taiwan was 5/8/25

i had forgotten about his post and our conversation about it. was totally dumbfounded when it arrived today

Glad you got it! I dumped a bunch of super glue in the cracks on that carbonized piece to keep it from shattering. Polish it. Boy does it look nice! I couldn’t ship that piece alone so I threw I that cool spalted piece I found on the beach. Not sure what it is but I knew you’d appreciate it!

Like I said, the above wood wasn't "free", but unplanned! The pocketbook is definitely lighter - needed the right equipment to get it all down and hauled off (the ash was within 10' of the house). The pocketbook is sad, but perhaps sadder for me is the loss of plants/beds. Luckily, I had a few days and was able to dig up a bunch of plants, but there were some places I had not planned on them needing access. Not a good time of year to dig up plants, but hopefully, I can nurse them back in my plant nursery!

The big cherry broke and fell and it took some sycamore limbs and big walnut limbs down with it. When the walnut limbs fell, they took out the smaller cherry as well as some hackberry limbs. Made a mess! Yes, I'm shameless - I need a little sympathy!

This used to be a hosta and azalea bed along with some ferns. Ash stump showing - one cherry stump is far back on the right near the Lil House - a smaller one is about halfway back.

This used to be a miniature hosta, fern and wildflower bed

With those trees down now, did you regain enough sunlight for a new garden area?

I took one down in late winter. If I don’t do something I will be raising saw briars and privet.
i hate to cut my big trees but a have several more that have to come down one dead, two with fungus arround base, and a couple that are leaning toward where I am intending to put up a building.

Some old growth redwood. Still had a sticker on it from a local Wood shop, dated 1979.
I'll send ya my address and I'll pay ya 10X the "free" price  You're a lucky dog

... I can't seem to find anything around here except pine ... and the rather large pile of wood I've picked up here. :good2:

One of our neighbors had a "Free Wood" sign beside half a cottonwood crotch so I picked it up to put on my burning pile. After I took a log at it I decided to put it on my little sawmill and slice it up and see if I could get some nice bowl blanks out of it. I managed to get several blanks out of it, and another piece that was lying there beside it had some nice figure as well. The rough turned bowls shown are the best of the lot.

Insane figure there! Hard to imagine how much pretty wood gets burned up or chipped every day.

I am blown away. Why can’t my neighbour give me free wood like that?

Could have but didn't see the big one I wanted. Passed up on a 16-18" wide 8 pt (4×4 for all you crazy westerners). All of us that hunt there have made the decision to let them grow. Still have another week before rifle season starts. I'll get a few put in the freezer then
