I’ve been looking for sumac trees for a while, only spotting them as small ornamental trees in gardens.
There is a very small population of very young trees on the road to the office, so I look at them every day, and I noticed the change in leaves colour now that autumn is halfway through.
Well, they really turn orange, so I started looking for orange wherever I drove my car.
I’ve been doing hundreds of miles since, and then I noticed a patch from the highway (when passing by at 80mph…).
I was able to locate it using google maps with satellite view and google streetview.
I was eventually able to get there and… there it is! A real staghorn sumac FOREST!
The trees grow several meters tall, with logs around 4-6” inches diameter, straight and clear for 10-15 feet.
What’s even better is that apparently this wood is very slow at rotting, so windswept trees are nearly free of any rot, and some good stuff can be found without hurting any live tree
Wood pictures will follow!
