Cholla holes are where the thorns grow. I believe they are called vesticles?. If that's not the real term, I need to be corrected, but that is where the thorns form and grow up to be a nuisance.
The wood you show is solid where Cholla is not. I do not see where these two could be related. ............ Nubs

I'm the same....
there is the log, the mill and a few slab pics. The log yielded 6 slab total with only 4 being decent. The outer two are always junky on a log of this diameter. I usually peel about 4 inches of the first pass to make sure and get below my fasteners on my guide rails. Then as I finish up, I simply flip the first slice over and take about 2 to 2.5 inches of the flat side. As you can see, that doesn't even penetrate to the Heartwood, so I have harvested the most Heartwood I can possibly get from that side. The other side leaves a wedge that has a smidge of Heartwood but I can't justify the effort cleaning it up. If I had a little more free time, I would throw it on a lathe and make a live edge bowl, but that must wait for another life.

I hear ya. I do almost exclusively woodturning nowadays, so trying to think how I might work some it.
Of course, it’s very sculptural, the way it is, so maybe shouldn’t be hacked up??

I looked at the back side and the grain seems pretty normal on the end with the bark. Kinda thick piece on that end, maybe 3”?
