What free wood did you find today?

My friend in Syracuse Indiana gets $100 an hour on a LT 30. He is 70 and stills moves fast enough to keep up.
My carver son brought me this today. Dogwood about 4’ long.
Surprised he didn’t keep it. Dogwood is very nice to carve.
He prefers basswood and to a lesser degree butternut and catalpa. He also does 1911 style pistol grips. I think the pinkish color of our dogwood would look good on a Colt.
Ah yes. I think we had this discussion before. He doesn’t carve his wood green does he?

Well, technically I did not get any free wood---YET :) I bet you there is going to be plenty of free wood after today. The Big Island and the rest of the stat is getting pounded by a huge hurricane right now. These winds are strong, we are prepared and hoping the winds don't get too bad and also hoping that some nice Koa trees get blown down on the mountain so I can go and get them after the storm. I will certainly take pictures of what ever I might find. We are in for a wild ride from now and getting worst through the night. Aloha nui loa.

Well, is it over yet? You ok?
Well the storm is over, at least the worst part, we are still getting rain but not as much and no wind. We did not get any damage, we are off grid so we still have power. Most of the Big Island is without power, a lot of trees are down, a lot of flooding. Now we start the clean up. I will be looking for some good wood that's for sure. Aloha.

Yesterday morning I found this……….i saved more than $2500 dollars. That’s what it cost last year to have a tree about the same size take down and left for me to cut and clean up. A red oak that I knew had root rot.
Update (for anyone who cares lol):
The logs are piled up along side of the log yard's traffic area.
I was going to have to haul the logs to the guy in a neighboring town. I only have a 5' x 8' single axle trailer that I like to limit the load weight to 1000# because I haven't beefed up the frame yet. If I had let him come to the log yard, he has a 4 hour minimum. Logs I have won't take that long.
As a last resort, I dug up the phone No. of the guy who milled my Cherry in 2020. He got back to me today and is still in business. Because he live in another neighboring town, he'll come to the log yard and mill my logs without a minimum. His price is comparable to the other guy.
He should be able to get to it soon. I'm tickled pink.
On a related subject, how many of you use Air Dried lumber in you projects? Is Kiln Drying really necessary? I know how to air dry lumber. I've stickered and stacked over 1000 BF of lumber while at the mill and I've done a few smaller lots of my own.
And I know you must sticker lumber you are going to use inside for a while before you use it. Guys on another forum routinely do this for years. A while ago, the general consensus is to kiln dry all lumber. I started to make a DH kiln, but never finished it (as many of my projects). So all my AD lumber sits.

Kiln drying also has some issues. Mainly that different species need to be down differently. This is to avoid case hardening. Air dried works fine just it takes very long and will never go below atmospheric mc. There are special sheets which tell you what it will dry to depending on atmospheric mc and temperature.
