I'm liking the sliced and sanded burl side more better than the bug side. That's beautiful.
Not exactly wood in regular form, but the house next door to me is being renovated.
The guys working there were going to throw out a 1/2 sheet of 1/2" plywood, & a 1/2 sheet of 3/4" plywood.
I hate to see it go to waste, so I asked for it & they gave it to me for free.
If it's free, it's me.

Yeah, never pass up free plywood as long as it's relatively flat and not all beat up. So many uses.
I found what appeared to be a mahogany or similar pallet in my run to the tile store today. Unfortunately it fell off the truck at a customers home who was intently building a couple jewelry/keepsake boxes for his granddaughters. Figured he might get it used before the end of the 2020s. And I might not...

One man’s trash is another man’s, “oh, heck yeah!”. I found this pile of driftwood dumped in the countryside near my home and thought it looked like great firewood. Unfortunately, the first day I saw it, there was already a resident cobra, so I decided to wait a bit to get it. I loaded some up , took it into my land and began splitting pieces. Right away found out a lot of it was Hinoki cypress. Then split this larger piece and BAM! the whole center was red. Nice piece of Coffinwood it turns out.

Beautiful find! But I want to know more about the cobra.
They are everywhere where I live. I usually get a handful in my house each year that my dogs will kill. This little one had his head poking out upside down from the wood pile. I thought it was a beetle at first and got closer to see what I was looking at. They are fine if you leave them alone. It’s more just not stepping on them or accidentally touching them.
I guess it was a Chinese cobra - this site show it as the only cobra in Taiwan and one of the more common snakes over all.

Yes, they are everywhere here. That website you mentioned is super useful. I’ve been recommending it to people for years. Kind of scary how many highly venomous snakes are the most common snakes here. I actually had a giant Taiwan Beauty Snake right outside my door the other day. Lovely non-venomous snake.
