I don't even know when or where I got it, or what for. I came across it today, but really have no use for it.

I'm almost 99.9% sure it's Ebony. It's very dense and tight grained and almost black.

It measures 8-15/16" long and 7/8" diameter. It weighs 3.5oz.

I'm guessing you could get two pens out of it.

The purplish red color on the end makes me think Burmese Blackwood....
I am probably wrong though.

In the sunlight you can see it's more of a very deep dark brown with a slight reddish hue in the middle of the dowel. Indoors it's almost black.
I was of the understanding that all ebony is not 100% pure black?

Pure black and some combination of black with tan streak- African Gaboon (Nigerian) and Madagascar.

Are you looking to trade or sell?

Trade I guess, I wouldn't know how much to sell it for.

Sorry, just realized you said that in the title!

Are you looking for turning blanks, boards, what do you want? Interested in it.

I may be interested. Do you have any other pieces for trade? Any live edge burl?

Wouldn't ya know I left my camera in my shop (12 miles away) today, so I can't take pics.

Are you interested in the live edge burl for turning or casting?

Reason I ask is that I have a block of York Gum Burl and a piece of Black Line Maple Burl, both have some live edge on one corner. Wouldn't really work too well in a turning (on the corner), but could be cut to be used in castings.
