Did something I almost never do and made an impulse splurge purchase based on a picture and without a specific purpose in mind. Even more rare, the chunk that just arrived is even prettier in person than it was in pictures.

Malaysian Blackwood (which is actually an ebony rather than blackwood), about 1.75" thick, 10" wide, and just shy of 6' long. And durn heavy!

I have a few uses in mind and need to decide how I want to cut it up for them.

Henry - that's a beauty!
Also - just wondering how shipping is handled for a somewhat oversized/heavy piece of wood like that? Does UPS handle or did you receive from a more specialized carrier?

UPS - I was worried shipping cost was going to be prohibitive, but the vendor said they'd just gotten new rates and what might have been $150+ a few months ago had dropped to <$75 with their new pricing.

Nice. When you cut off that crummy wavy curly section right after your letters "4A" and don't know what to do with it, well, keep me in mind. I could take one for the team and probably help you out with that.

I had to order another section of mosaic pin to complete the second knife with holly handles. Here's what the tracking shows....

Why would they send something from Oklahoma City to Memphis TN in order to send it to Oregon? I guess one just has to assume someone knows what they're doing.

Memphis is the FedEx hub. Not much goes a long way (by air) without going to Memphis.

If that is FexEx, Memphis is their superhub! It's kinda fun seeing all those planes taking off almost the same time. Not too fun when you're flying in General Aviation when that is happening. I think I've heard that on average 1.5 million packaged come and go through that facility each evening! All done in just a few hours!

Superhub, suberpub, bloopersub... doesn't make any sense to send things to the east coast when the intended address is on the west coast.

Weird things happen with logistics these days. It's not about single packages anymore but about truck and plane loads of material. If I mail a letter from home to Galesburg (7 miles east), it goes from here to Peoria (50 miles east) driving right past Galesburg, is sorted in Peoria then comes back to Galesburg for delivery. Instead of small sorting facilities and labor in smaller towns, cheaper to invest in large sorting facilities in metro areas with larger labor force.

I’ve always wondered how FedEx has changed. When they advanced (I won’t say invented) just in time delivery, I read about Memphis and how many miles a package might trave to be delivered only a hundred or so. I even worked with a contractor that had an arrangement where they would actually hold an airplane at Albuquerque to get a package. Wouldn’t hold it long but would hold it. These days with gate times being so tight they probably can’t do that any more, but great story back in the day when they had to have something to us (the Air Force) for a contractual delivery.

Amazing to think what has happened in 30+ years and what Amazon does today.

Setting crime aside for the moment, Memphis is a major shipping hub because it‘s more centrally located and, thus, very active with trains, planes, trucking, shipping routes for moving goods around. Location is a major reason why FedEx super hub is here.

Okay, I need all of you to stop trying to rationalize and explain FedEx parcel routing. You're harshing my whining.

Gonna have to work on your geography, my friend, Memphis is barely 1/3 of the way from OKC to the east coast. Next you'll be complaining that Oklahoma is in the SEC! :lol2:

Might not be all the way to the east coast but it's east enough, and still 466.1 miles in the wrong direction. And the wind blew stupid snow all over the place last night, so even under the covered portion of my deck had to be cleaned off this morning before I could put the hummingbird feeder back out, so I'm even more grumpier than normal.

Right on! We need to reserve this place for real meaningful whining like migrating robin poop and wind blown snow and why country western music all sounds alike these days.

A: Nothing!

Q: what's in the mail?

See, I can complain about both windblown snow and the post office. After blowing 8" of wet snow out of the drive yesterday, I'm about to head out and blow through the two foot high drifts that formed last night from two inches of fluffy blown snow.

Not that it really matters, township still hasn't made down our road so it's all a moot point.

Can't really complain about the post office though, no way they could deliver on these roads without a couple snowmobiles.
