If I didn't mention him, check out Paul Sellers, too. Similar method (though with all diamond plates instead of 1 diamond plate and 1 oilstone). Both work equally well in my opinion.I took the advice of @SENC about some Englister (Richard Maguire) about sharpening. The only thing I did not have that he recommended is this, a big 120 grit lapping plate/sharpener.

Fantastic - I must have missed a thread.Pulled this out of the mailbox today when I got home.
Thanks @chatometry Paolo did a smash up job of making sense of our what if questions on how shiny and how figured is that wood?View attachment 273976
Thanks, ordered! Always like supporting WB members!I only heard about its completion maybe 2 weeks ago or thereabouts. It is on Amazon. There are qr code links to almost everything he talks about leading to other rabbit holes or short clips of different wood under different lighting or... You get the idea.
Charts on finish effects, sanding effects, ammonia fuming, uv changes. If it has to do with light and it's interaction with wood and how to control the chatoyance, it is likely to be found in here.
Almost 300 pages of wood worker delight. Great for just strolling through or actually learning something from if you insist on being barbaric and only buying something useful...
I wired up a vfd to my southbend .etal lathe .any years ago. Just read the mannual and take it a step at a time and you'll be fine. If I remember correctly there are specifics about how to wire the switch etc. You can set parameters like soft start and ramp up speed and ramp down etc. 3 phase motors last forever an and these vfd's make it possible to use them with single phase power. My laguna lathe came with one from the factory. They are much more common now.Yesterday I ordered my first VFD drive. I picked up a Powermatic 141 Band saw with a 3-phase motor months ago. It has sat unused for far too long. I thought it would be easy to pick up a used single phase motor from Marketplace to swap it out but easier said than done. A brand new US brand motor is more than I want to spend but I'll pass on the cheap motors from the country that shall remain un-named that never seem to work for very long. The original motor is far superior to any of the affordable options so out of my comfort zone into the world of electrical I will go.
I'm completely intimidated by this VFD but it is in the mail. My wife was an electrical engineer in her first career, but isn't familiar with wiring motors / equipment. I'm only reasonably comfortable with basic electrical. We'll read the instructions, refer to Youtube & Google, and either make it work or let the magic smoke out.
I'm looking forward to having variable speed on the small band saw.
I'm on a roll this week. The factory dogs on my little Husky are wimpy & undersized. These seem to have good reviews so a set is on the way. This should be a nice upgrade.
I feel it's a good thing for HONEST citizens to do when they are called to do that duty.I got a jury summons.
Update: but in the plus side, I filled out the form for excusal because I'm over 70. They had a box to provide a comment so I wrote "Thanks, I appreciate the opportunity to do my civic duty and put some bad guys in jail. But I have to weigh that opportunity against the forehead rubbing, cringe worthy chance that I'd be forced to listen to some Bendite try to explain that the criminal was the actual victim, that it was actually society's or the government's fault and they didn't really mean it, and they deserve leniency yadda yadda yadda. So after weighing those two potential outcomes, I have to decline the opportunity and request excusal." They excused me.
PPSS: I want to know why Jerry added a "way cool" emoji to the fact I got a jury summons?!? Not cool.
just cause , lolI feel it's a good thing for HONEST citizens to do when they are called to do that duty.
I've been called once, and I didn't get selected. I did my duty by going to court and wasting a whole day only to find I was not good enough.............. Nubs
I hope you know I'm just pulling your leg Jerry. I tend to agree with you that it is an essential part of our judicial system and as long as people who serve can truly take an unbiased position and let the facts lead them to a justifiable conclusion, it works great. The problem I've found is there are too many people who cannot leave their personal biases at home and it becomes an unwinnable bun fight, and ultimately a waste of everyone's time. I've served my jury duty several times, the most recent on grand jury for a month. So I feel like I've done my share. Which is another burr under my saddle - they use a random lottery system to select people. I've been called 4 times since we moved to Oregon in 2012. I know three people who have lived here their entire lives and have never been called. I think they need to put people who have already served at least once in a separate lotto until every registered voter has served, or been given the opportunity.I feel it's a good thing for HONEST citizens to do when they are called to do that duty.
