Woods from The Island of Tonga

Some of the harder to find woods are ko’u and Hau (@Jonkou). The traditional woods tamanu, milo, Kamani (true and false species), õhia to name a few to your list……
Aloha Woods was sold. I tried buying several times the last 2 years. They never returned calls or finished orders. Very frustrating, I miss the staff they had. They also raised prices a lot. At least, that was 2023 and 2024. Maybe this year will be better.

Yes, they were sold several years to a local. They were one of the only spots in HI where you can get multiple species for small crafts in a flat rate box. I would call them during Hawaiian time (work hours) and ask them specifically what you need.

I did call them during business hours. There were 2 women and 1 guy I often spoke with. They left when the new owner took over. They took politeness and a level of courtesy with them. I spoke with the new owner. He informed me if neighboring mills can get away with high prices, so can he and hobbyist are just a some player in the game. He needed to make money, not friendships. That was a turn off, so I have not dealt with them since. Thus another reason I reached out to a WB member living there. However, he is busy too.

@Eric Rorabaugh I posted pics of this before on another forum, but this is sea hibiscus. This piece is a bit odd in having black heartwood. I don't see most of it having this coloration. Like I mentioned, I can't mill things at the moment, but you are welcome to one of the logs. The crotch piece might be really awesome to turn.

@Eric Rorabaugh I have this sample box of Taiwanese woods I had packaged up for a client in Russia years ago, right before the whole COVID then war situation. I was never able to ship it to Russia as Taiwan stopped allowing shipping there. I will have to find the reference list of all the woods included, but it’s got breadfruit, beach sheoak (casuarina), bishopwood, beautyleaf lauralwood, Indian almond and a load of other local woods including a big cookie of Chinese pistache. I can remove the small logs of dogbone wood, chrysanthemum wood and orange jessamine and include the sea hibiscus log instead if you want. Forgot how nice this pack was. If you want it, I’m fine discussing a cheap price that takes into account the shipping. Forgot to mention also, but papaya is a plant similar to bananas. You can’t get wood out of it.

Wow look at that sample box Byron has laid out for you- 1). you still have time to make up for the loss blunder from O’ahu, 2). the bare-klaw is not coming out (oh no, no, no) and, 3). there is no “might”………”cheap price is the key word”….……what are you waiting for? Press that button pronto, as you are the only contestant on this “price is right”! Come to aisle 9 Warden. “From Russia With Love”……..retitled to “From Taiwan with Love”. :sarcastic:

If Byron asks you what is a “bare klaw”, tell him it’s an ugly deformed stuff animal that is banned in Taiwan and it is only available to be shipped to Brooklyn.

Wow Byron. That looks great. Do you have a box that would fit all of that and the hibiscus? I'd even be interested in exchanging the crotch piece for the straight one if that's easier. Just let me know. Even if we have to do two boxes, I'm interested in it all. If you could label what they are would be awesome!

Let me know a price you’d like to pay for it all plus shipping and I’ll see if the shipping can fit in that price. If it does, I’ll confirm with you then post it within the wood for sale forum with you tagged. Again, I’m not worried about the price. Whatever seems fair to you

Heck I don't know. I don't price other people's stuff. What did I sell you the yew bow staves for? See if we can get in the ball park of that.

Hi @Mr. Peet Do you happen to have a piece of the tropical almond 18" long that could be used to turn a spindle 18" x 1 1/4? If so I'd love a piece!

No, these were 3/4 thick shorts, maybe 3.5 wide, 12" long by 3/4" thick. I'll have to look, wife may have burned them. You know, trip on them once, maybe, but twice they go.

@Byron Barker you ever find anything out on this?

@Byron Barker
THANK YOU!!!!
Send me a PM when you see this and we'll square up. Kinda ironic that it showed up today. I didn't know you were sending it.
Got to be a surprise. Makes it fun. I’m not sure what you want to pay. I’m trying to uncluttered my life, so I don’t particularly care about the money. What did I pay you for the yew? We can do that price. I’ll post it on the wood for sale forum after we decide on something.

@Byron Barker Good to see you back Byron. How's life? Do you remember what the woods are circled in your picture? I'd be interested in getting a piece of each big enough to make a couple of pen blanks of each.

Hey mate! Life is good…and busy. Not really doing the wood thing right now because the government shut down shipping to America after the tariffs started. The top one is coffinwood and the bottom one is litchi. Hope you are well!

Where is that sucks button? I am waiting on a shipment from Germany. Small package of samples but tariffs make it not worth getting at this time.

Hope to get some wood off you in the future.

@Byron Barker That does suck. Hopefully at some point in the future I'll be able to get a piece of each. I'm doing well. I also got into making rings which is fun. Take care!
