Looking for dry maple burl approx 1.5 x 1.5 x 6 to fill a MFRB. Here's a picture of roughly what I'm after. This is my first time posting on this part of the forum, so please be gentle. Thanks in advance! 😊

I have a little maple burl but it does not look like that. What kind of maple are you looking for, mine is Rock maple AKA sugar maple.

I have plenty of big leaf. But if they all have to look like that, the best of the best, I am not your guy.

Yea I dont expect that every piece will look that way. But if you have a chunk that looks like it will yield some pieces of dense burl pattern, I'd be interested. The first few photos look promising. Can you let me know pricing? Thanks!

That particular photo was big leaf maple.
most maple burl you see is big leaf.
Sorry I just like to get rules right, upfront. So much easier that way. I have that cap. I can weigh and get price. I have LOTS of big leaf.

I appreciate it. To be clear, I'm looking for 1.5x6" pieces to fill up just a MFRB. So probably not an entire chunk.

so call blanks. I usually cut those at 1.75 x1.75 x 6 $8
Depending on how wet they are and how much additional warpage occurs, I think 1.5"x1.5" should already be sufficiently oversized for my use. Are they green or partially dry? How many do you think would fit inside a box?

I understand that. But the ones thahave a flaw or are short can be cut into pen blanks a maybe get up to 4. You get 1 pen blank out of 1.5 . My slabs are cut into 1.75+ or 2.125. If you want 1.5 I am probably not your guy.
I cut hundreds of calls and knife blanks. Sorta standardized to what is most efficient.
Blanks would be 8% to just under 20. I find maple safe in that range.

Brandon,

I don't know you (Welcome to the mix) but would say, Mike is a great guy to have as a supplier. You are asking him to cut blanks, he is offering oversized for basically the same price. That extra adds huge safety in savings. If the grain causes it to walk when curing, you have the added material to compensate. If it drys perfect, you have the added bonus to re-mill and maximize figure for the piece. And it gives the fall back as 4 pen blanks or more pending pen style. Being a state away, regional box shipping might be cheaper than flat-rate. It is worth the risk.

Thanks for the clarification, much appreciated. I didn't mean to offend. Also didnt know that you already slabbed them in 1.75. Larger is totally not an issue, just assumed (incorrectly) it could be of some benefit to you if the pieces were smaller. Anyways, please let me know what makes the most sense in terms of shipping quantity from your location to California. Thanks!

Maybe I'll save for next batch. Just the maple for now, thanks!

Here are a few. Darker and white.. white Means they were cut and processed quickly. Bubbly almost quilted burl sometimes. If it sets in log or burl form for a couple years it darkens. Yours might even be close to spalted.
