I spent last week in Boulder, Colorado, in a Spindle Turning class with Stuart Batty. The first two days focussed on the cuts - straight, concave (cove), convex (bead), and taper (cone).
Then came cutting a pommel - square and angled/straight, we didn't do the "lamb's tongue" or curved ones. Then turning a newel post to a design chosen from a book of profiles - with pommels, beads, coves, fillets, and an ogee. Next up - a 3" diameter sphere with a stand. Finally, a long-stemmed goblet, almost 12" tall, with a bead and fillet on the underside of the foot.
It was a great learning experience - he's a very proficient turner, with an emphasis on safe and efficient turning, and has a clear and precise teaching style.
