I spent last week in Boulder, Colorado, in a Spindle Turning class with Stuart Batty. The first two days focussed on the cuts - straight, concave (cove), convex (bead), and taper (cone).

Then came cutting a pommel - square and angled/straight, we didn't do the "lamb's tongue" or curved ones. Then turning a newel post to a design chosen from a book of profiles - with pommels, beads, coves, fillets, and an ogee. Next up - a 3" diameter sphere with a stand. Finally, a long-stemmed goblet, almost 12" tall, with a bead and fillet on the underside of the foot.

It was a great learning experience - he's a very proficient turner, with an emphasis on safe and efficient turning, and has a clear and precise teaching style.

Looks like a great skill-building class that will pay dividends through all your future turnings! Those are the best classes in my opinion.

Nice job on the projects too!

Yes, that's why I wanted to take this class (as opposed to one that is "how to make a this-or-that" class), hoping to break my bad habits and build some good ones for whatever I choose to make.

Thanks!

Tough to master. Really need to develop muscle memory for it.
I can see how it would be difficult if somebody wasn't right there at your elbow guiding you through it. His grinder platforms are etched with lines at 40 degrees out from the sides of the wheels which reduces the guesswork.

He visited our club 10/12 years ago and I attended an afternoon workshop with him. The 40/40, and his platform, was part of the class. I just never stayed with that grind.

I saw him at SWAT. Attended one of his classes, and watched a demo he did. What a pro! Never had any hands-on with him, but would be a treat. Chuck
